California Poppy

$34.00

The California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica) is the official state flower of California. Their peak blooming season is in the spring, when hillsides are covered with carpets of colorful poppies.  These wildflowers have deep taproots that allow them to withstand periods of water scarcity. Their nectar-rich flowers attract and support local pollinator populations, including bees and butterflies. In Native American traditions the seeds were used for food, oil extraction, and medicinal purposes including as a mild sedative and to alleviate toothaches. California Poppies are protected by law in the state, and it is illegal to pick them on public land.
