American Toad
American toads (Anaxyrus americanus) are found throughout Canada and the eastern US. These common toads are primarily nocturnal. They spend the daylight hours hiding in cool, moist places to avoid the heat and potential predators. Females lay between 2,000-20,000 eggs in two strings which can hatch in 3-12 days. During the winter months, American toads hibernate underground or in other sheltered locations to survive the cold temperatures. They may burrow into the soil or seek refuge in logs or leaf litter.
