Abalone
Abalone are mollusks found worldwide in coastal waters and are actually a type of marine snail. They are a delicious delicacy and are prized for their beautiful shells that have a pearlescent inside. While we may value these stunning exoskeletons for their array of colors, they serve a much more essential role for the abalone throughout their lives. In addition to providing critical protection for their soft bodies, the tiny holes that spiral around the shell allow for the release of critical fluids including eggs and sperm!
