March 2020 Newsletter!

Greetings Everyone!

The sap is running!! That means spring is right around the corner. I have to admit our winter was pretty mild, but we’re still super excited for spring! Plants coming up in our perennial beds and in the woods around our neighborhood, planting our veggie garden and baby chicks… all wonderful things to look forward to!

New Club Colors!

With Valentine’s day in the background, we decided to design March’s club colorways with love in mind! Here are March’s Club colors, with a little tidbit about each creature’s unique approach to love-making!

This month’s Ornithology Club is inspired by the Waved Albatross. The Albatross is monogamous, and recognizes its mate by the way it dances! The mating dance involves a honking noise the females no doubt find extremely attractive, along with beak clacking and the affectionate rubbing of beaks.

This month’s Entomology Club is inspired by the Elephant Hawkmoth, a native of the British Isles. This beautiful moth’s love life is deeply intertwined with that of the native Honeysuckle (this month’s Botany inspiration). The native honeysuckle’s scent is especially strong in the evening, to attract the moths to come and feed at the honeysuckle blossoms. The moths drink from the delicious sweet blossoms, and serve as pollinators for the Honeysuckle. The moth knows that the wild honeysuckle scent attracts other moths, and so the Moths flit from flower to flower, releasing pheromones as they travel.

This month’s Aquatic Club is inspired by the Weedy Seadragon, a native of Australia. It appears that childrearing is a bit more egalitarian under the sea! Male Seadragons, like seahorses, are the ones responsible for carrying their young. After a lengthy and romantic courtship, the female lays around 120 eggs onto the brood pouch located on the underside of the males' tail. The eggs are then fertilised and carried by the male for around a month before the hatchlings emerge. These little babies are completely independent, feeding from the waters within hours of being born!
